What is in Tattoo ink?

Updated: Apr 7

I've decided to start doing some more informational blogs on here. If you are interested in more of the science behind tattooing, please visit: www.thescienceoftattooing.com

Tattoo ink is made up of two main components: pigments and carrier fluids.

1. Pigments (Color)

  • These are the substances that give the ink its color. They can come from a variety of sources:

    • Carbon black (for black ink)

    • Metallic salts (like iron oxide or titanium dioxide for red and white)

    • Organic compounds (such as azo dyes for bright colors)

    • Plastic-based pigments (used for vibrant, long-lasting colors)

2. Carrier Fluids

  • These are liquids that help evenly distribute the pigment and prevent contamination. Common carriers include:

    • Distilled water

    • Glycerin

    • Alcohol (like ethanol or isopropyl alcohol)

    • Propylene glycol

    • Witch hazel

3. Other Additives

  • Some inks may also contain:

    • Preservatives

    • Binding agents

    • Thickeners or stabilizers
